Following sustained feedback from downstream businesses affected by the UK steel trade measures coming into force on 1 July, the Department for Business and Trade has now published the final measures.
Overall, quota allocations have been increased from those set out in the provisional announcement on 19 March, particularly in Categories 1 and 7, which were areas of significant concern for many CEA members.
The CEA welcomes the Government’s response to strong and consistent industry engagement. While the revised quotas represent a clear improvement on the original proposals, concerns remain in certain categories where UK capacity and capability are insufficient.
Where products are not available from UK mills, there is a risk that manufacturers will face additional costs and potential disruption to their operations and supply chains.
The biggest EU quota increases are in Category 1, hot-rolled sheets and strips, which has increased by 306,774 tonnes, Category 17, angles, shapes and sections, which has increased by 147,572 tonnes, Category 6, tin mill products, which has increased by 35,025 tonnes, Category 12B, non-alloy merchant bars and light sections, which has increased by 43,164 tonnes, and Category 5, organic coated sheets, which has increased by 20,000 tonnes.
The EU quota decreases are in Category 4, metallic coated sheets, which has decreased by 124,500 tonnes, and Category 28, non-alloy wire, which has decreased by 4,702 tonnes.
The biggest non-EU quota increases are in Category 1, hot-rolled sheets and strips, which has increased by 57,889 tonnes, Category 6, tin mill products, which has increased by 22,945 tonnes, Category 12B, non-alloy merchant bars and light sections, which has increased by 20,938 tonnes, Category 26, other welded tubes, which has increased by 14,639 tonnes, and Category 12A, alloy merchant bars and light sections, which has increased by 13,260 tonnes.
The non-EU quota decreases are in Category 28, non-alloy wire, which has decreased by 15,789 tonnes, and Category 25A, large welded tubes (1), which has decreased by 1 tonne.
