Gem Plant Sales Ltd, the Ashford based Wacker Neuson distributor for South-East London and Kent has recently supplied ‘a very bespoke’ model ET145 excavator to Aztech Tree Services of Sevenoaks, Kent. It is being used to fulfil a critical conservation project in the region’s woodlands to help tackle Ash Dieback disease.

The Wacker Neuson excavator has been painted in an eye-catching gloss black finish by J C Commercials of Aylesham, Canterbury and then fitted with a VOSCH 1600 Grapple Saw by Richard Court Forestry Engineering Ltd, based in Godalming Surrey.

The machine has also been supplied with a set of buckets and hydraulic hitch by well- known manufacturer, Strickland MFG, who went ‘above and beyond’ in supplying these in a speedy time.

Adam Ashworth, the owner of Aztech Tree Services (pictured) explained that the machine will be used to help combat the serious problem of Ash Dieback disease (Chalara) by felling diseased trees in local woodlands and estates in the safest and most cost-effective method. The felled timber is then processed for use as a biomass fuel.

Graham Mortimore of GEM Plant explains, “It was very much a team effort to complete this very bespoke machine, to spec on time, so thanks to all involved and to Aztech Tree Services for their custom.”

The Wacker Neuson model ET145 is widely regarded as ‘The Champion of the Compact Excavators’.  It offers significantly enhanced performance, without the size of the excavator ever posing a problem. Its performance, stability and agility are perfectly balanced. Up to five additional control circuits, of which three are individually adjustable for multifunctional attachments, make this machine an ideal choice for working with the Vosch Grapple Saw.

Ash Dieback is a highly destructive disease for ash trees especially in the UK’s native species- It is caused by a fungus of Asian origin and is present in most parts of the UK now. The felling of diseased trees helps to reduce its spread but above all, they are becoming a real safety hazard. Chalara is making these trees incredibly brittle and unpredictable. Our aim is to help prevent the risk of damage to property and prevent any severe injury to members of the public as a result of tree failure.
