Following the success of his previous titles in the Earthmovers In series, David Wylie is in the final stages of publishing his latest book, Earthmovers in Classic Mining Machines.

This new publication brings together some of the biggest and most historically significant mining machines ever built. It covers hydraulic and rope shovels, haul trucks, and large mining dozers, both past and present, with a focus on the machines that have shaped the industry.

The book features a foreword by Eric C. Orlemann and draws on one of the world’s most significant private collections of earthmoving photography, helping to bring these machines and their stories to life.

Across 18 detailed chapters, David combines technical insight with real-world context, covering the history of the machines, the sites they worked on, and the people who operated and managed them. It includes some of the largest machines ever produced, such as the O&K RH400 (over 950 tonnes), the RH300, RH120C and RH200, and the 1000-tonne class Cat 6090 FS face shovel. Other highlights include the evolution of Liebherr’s mining excavators from the R 996 to the R 9600, the Komatsu D575A super dozer, Cat 789 haul trucks, the original Cat D10 Hi-Drive dozer, P&H 4100 rope shovels, and LeTourneau’s L700 through to the L2350 wheel loaders.

The book contains more than 450 photographs, including a number of rare and previously unpublished images. Over 70 of these are presented across double-page spreads, giving readers a closer look at the scale, design and operation of these machines.

Earthmovers in Classic Mining Machines is expected to go to print this summer and will be a limited edition, with just 300 copies available.
