End-of-year message from CEO Suneeta Johal- A year of progress and collaboration

Dear CEA Members,

As 2023 draws to a close, I want to take this opportunity to reflect on the year’s journey and express my gratitude for your continued support and contribution to the Construction Equipment Association.

This year has been marked by significant milestones and some challenges, but through it all, the CEA has remained a strong and influential voice in our industry. Our policy work attracted attention in the highest circles, with two mentions in the Commons, emphasising our impact and relevance in shaping sector policies. Our appearance in the Financial Times against the watered-down version of the government’s net zero policies highlights our dedication to eco-friendly manufacturing processes, acknowledges the significant progress achieved in our industry, and emphasises the considerable investment involved.

Our active involvement in influencing the requirements of the new EU Machinery Regulation demonstrates our dedication to maintaining high standards and facilitating smooth transitions in a changing regulatory landscape.

Post-Brexit, our focus has shifted to building robust advocacy channels with UK regulators while maintaining our valued connection with Brussels. The formation of the Equipment & Machinery Industry Forum (EMIF) is a testament to our belief in the power of collective voice. The forum, now with 14 member associations, was founded and is led by the CEA and has been instrumental in shaping industry dialogue, policies, and provides a platform for direct advocacy with UK government. The forum is regularly attended by representatives of the Department for Business and Trade, the Department for Transport, the Department for Food, Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the Health and Safety Executive.

A landmark achievement this year was the Chancellor’s commitment to making full expensing permanent, a change we championed alongside MAKE UK, CBI, and over 200 organisations. This policy shift demonstrates the effectiveness of collaborative industry-government engagement.

Our Members’ Forum meetings have continued to be a source of strength and inspiration, shaping the direction and spirit of our association. I am excited for their continued success in the coming year – thank you to all of our members that have attended and contributed – and to the forum leads for your guidance and support.

Looking ahead to 2024, we will intensify our focus on net zero, and as we look ahead to the possibility of a Labour government, we are eager to gather insights from you, our valued members, to compile a ‘wishlist’ of policy initiatives and changes we hope to see under a potential new leadership. Your contributions are essential in shaping a robust and representative agenda that we can advocate for, ensuring our voice is heard in the shaping of future policies that align with our industry’s values and objectives.

As we embark on this new chapter, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a peaceful, prosperous New Year. Your dedication and teamwork are the cornerstone of the CEA, and I am confident that together, we will continue to make remarkable strides in our industry.

Warm regards,

Suneeta Johal CEO,
