Keane on construction: Duncan’s push to revitalise UK manufacturing

0

Last Friday, Joanna Oliver, MBE, Public Affairs & International Programmes at the CEA, had a productive discussion with Keane Duncan, a North Yorkshire and York Mayoral Combined Authority candidate. They discussed Duncan’s plans to support manufacturing and promote engineering #apprenticeships, focusing on involving young people.

Joanna was pleased with Duncan’s approach to making the Apprenticeship Levy more accessible for SMEs, particularly those below the £3 million Levy threshold. Joanna: “Despite the rural nature of North Yorkshire and York, it has a strong manufacturing base that adds greatly to the local economy.”

Duncan committed to pushing schools to introduce engineering as a viable career option for students at all levels. Joanna referenced the work of Primary Engineer, a charity supported by the CEA and Plantworx Construction Exhibition 2023, which has successfully encouraged students to consider engineering and #STEM careers from a young age.

The CEA serves as the voice of the UK construction equipment sector, working closely with the UK Government and devolved assemblies to align regional and national policies with the industry’s needs.

By promoting collaboration with government bodies and educational organisations, we are helping to create a supportive environment for the industry, aiding SMEs, and inspiring future generations of engineers.
