East Lothian based A M Dagg Plant Hire Ltd has opted for a brand new sixteen tonne Volvo EC160E crawler excavator thanks in part to the good service and reliability of an older EC160B it replaces after 17000 trouble free hours.

“Overall we’ve had a good experience operating all of our Volvo machines over the last Twelve years or so including the sixteen tonner, EC140Bs, the BL71 backhoe loader and previously to that, Samsung excavators,” says Plant Manager Scott Gordon. “Our operators certainly appreciate the Volvo machines in regard to comfort in the cab, the controllability, digging performance and overall build quality. In addition, Volvo has provided us with very good back up when it’s been needed and that is extremely important for a busy plant hire concern such as ourselves. The residual values on the Volvos are very strong too, so opting for another new Volvo excavator for our mixed plant fleet made perfect sense,” he continues.

The EC160E features a Tier IV final 4 litre Volvo engine developing 148 nett horsepower. Operators can select the best work mode for the task at hand, ensuring optimum performance and fuel efficiency. Modes include: I-idle, F-fine, G-general, H-heavy or P-power, with the machine automatically setting the appropriate engine speed for the work mode and ECO mode is a new feature that works in G to H (or P) mode. Pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, while maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. Eco mode provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions.

The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14 vent, climate control system. An adjustable easy to read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings. The monitor also doubles as a monitor for the rear view camera which is fitted as standard.

A M Dagg Plant Hire Ltd is based at East Saltoun, East Lothian located to the south east of Edinburgh. Besides offering a varied mixed fleet of construction equipment for general plant hire and earthmoving contracts, the company also specialises in forestry work, land clearance, land drainage and the construction and maintenance of hillside roads and tracks.
